Now sunshine felt really out of place, Sunshine felt like a side adventure from a different studio rather than a mainline Mario.Īh the Pachinko part of Sunshine. Then galaxy came and it had everything I wanted in Mario plus space which is always a plus for me. Tbh I did miss the usual Mario tropes of ice world, desert world etc.

I really liked the summer atmosphere though, felt like you were on holiday. What made it worse was there was no easy to know which coins you collected and which are still out there, you literally needed a guide and checklist to complete it I didn't mind the blue coins as a kid because I could spend days playing 1 game as I didn't afford my own so had to make do with what I had but as I grew up I really hated the collection. What might have taken a jump, wall jump and a bit of parkour to get a platform in 64 in sunshine it's jump and hold fludd to hover and that's it. Mainly because of repetive mission structure and the world layout wasn't as fun to explore with the fludd compared to Mario normal movements. Playing it as a teen it's lack of gameplay diversity and limited movement became apparent. I really liked sunshine as a kid but I still preferred 64 over it. Mario is a dream to control, the water and gunk both look great and have both aged really well, and the game has a really unique vibe to it, but playing this again, now as an adult, I can see the areas where it was rushed and padded There are def some great things about the game. Hatching Yoshi is also more tedium as you have to find a fruit and bring it to him, which is always just more padding. Yoshi is also in the game and barely used, plus he limits your movement options so is best avoided unless you 100% need him for the mission. The rocket and boost nozzles are barely required at all, and the best platforming levels strip you of FLUDD completely. My final point is the FLUDD isn't really used to it's full potential. The number of unique missions is extremely low 7 of the 50 are shadow Mario chases, and about 12 or so are 'secret' levels, which are the levels where you lose FLUDD and have to undertake a platforming challenge (these levels are awesome though) The plant boss is repeated once, though the second time is harder.

Of the 50 shines you need, 3 are the same blooper boss, with zero changes to how the fight works. In Sunshine, you have to get all of the required 50, and nothing else matters. It also meant you could neglect levels or missions or mission types you don't enjoy that much to focus on other stars. That way every star is viable and contributes towards your progress in the game. The great thing about Mario 64 was you only need 70/120 stars to beat the game, but those 70 can be any 70 from the game. So you're incentivised (once aware of the win criteria) to just get the 50 that you need, which is what I'm doing. This pretty much makes all of the other shines, pointless, as unless you want 100% completion, they don't add to anything.ġ00% completion is also a nightmare as 56/120 shines are from collecting coins, with the blue coins being hidden so well you'd need a guide to get them all The game doesn't ever tell you this, so if you've come from Mario 64, you just keep playing the game until you accidently trigger the end of the game scenario by happening onto the correct 50 shines The 7th is always a showdown with shadow Mario, which is basically a tag match that lasts 30-60 seconds That is to say, the first 7 of each main world. You don't need 50 out of 120 shines to beat the game, you need a specific 50 to beat the game. That's less than the 70 you need for Mario 64, but herein lies one of the most insane parts about Sunshine, and it's something I only just found out This is because the game only requires 50 shines to beat it. I reckon I'll hit credits before 7 hours. I should also mention, I'm about 5 hours in. I've basically got the first 7 shines in all but the last level, and I'm about a third of the way towards finishing that level to, but this game has huge flaws and a lot of the run time is padded as hell I was aware that a lot of people dislike this game, but as a kid I loved it, and at the time it reviewed well, so I always assumed the vocal group of critics didn't have much of a point, but.they kind of doįirstly, I am still enjoying myself. I have a little retro gaming set up now so I'm playing this on an original Wii hooked up to a 25'' CRT via RGB cables, and I pretty much decided to play it after beating Mario 64, this time with all 120 stars for the first time, a few months ago I loved this game as a kid, and must have played it 2/3 times, but I've not played it in at least 15 years
